Understanding Language Disorders
Language disorders occur when a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language) or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings (expressive language). Language disorders may be spoken or written, and involves listening, processing, speaking, reading, writing, and pragmatics.
Language therapy involves phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and prelinguistic communication. Pragmatics involves the language use and social aspects of communication. Many children with autism have a difficult time with the pragmatic use of our language. Impairments in receptive and expressive language can make it difficult for a child to follow directions, produce meaningful sentences, answer questions, and maintain a conversation.
Language intervention is prescriptive based on the child’s unique needs. Language therapy can improve a child’s ability to understand and use language, including vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and social communication. It is a form of therapy that helps people communicate more effectively by working on the meaning behind words and how they are put together to form sentences.
For a young child, therapy will be play-based. As students get older, therapy may shift to more written language. Memory, attention, planning, problem-solving, organization, and other executive functions may also be addressed in a therapy session.
Many language disorders can be early signs of a learning disability. A language disorder in a young child may mean the child is not talking, only has a few words, has trouble answering questions, or maintaining a conversation. If you suspect your child may have a language disorder, do not delay; schedule an evaluation today!
If you need help identifying your child’s unique needs, we offer private speech, language and educational evaluations which include Independent Education Evaluations which is paid by the public school district if approved. Go to Evaluations page.
