Is Your Child Struggling with Writing?

Writing challenges can often go unnoticed, but they can have a significant impact on a child’s confidence and academic progress.

If your child is facing any of the following issues, you’re not alone. These common writing struggles can be improved with the right support and guidance.

Take a look at these signs to see if your child might benefit from targeted writing help:

  • Does your child have writing you can’t read?
  • Does your child reverse letters and numbers when they write?
  • Does your child hate to write?
  • Does your child hold the pen with the wrong grip?
  • Does your child apply too much pressure when writing?
  • Does your child start letters and numbers from the bottom, moving upward?
  • Does your child’s writing appear to be floating on the page?
  • Does your child struggle with proper spacing and letter sizing?

Handwriting is an essential skill. There is also research that supports handwriting supports literacy development. Advances in technology such as keyboarding and speech to text are wonderful but
does not replace the skill of learning to write.

It is important for text to be legible so the individual can convey their thoughts and meaning! Many children with learning and/or fine motor disabilities may have sloppy writing, reverse letters and number or start letter and number formation at the bottom and move up.

No letters or numbers should start at the bottom and move up. Children should no longer reverse letters and number by the age of 8. Letters and numbers have specific starting points, pathways and exit strokes.

Letters and numbers and are not shapes that are drawn. Often children are given letters and numbers to trace, and they develop their own motor plan which is often wrong and over time that motor plan becomes solid from practice which makes it harder to change.

Handwriting starts with the correct pen hold which most commonly is the dynamic tripod grasp, but the plume hold is also acceptable. Try using a pen with easy ink flow instead of a pencil which requires a lot of pressure and can encourage the wrong pen hold. If your child struggles with handwriting, don’t delay! Schedule an evaluation, therapy and/or access our amazing e-book and videos in our store and membership!

To reserve and keep weekly therapy sessions. I require clients to prepay for all sessions once a month using a tuition-based model. Prepayment is required to hold reserved weekly therapy sessions. The Fixed model allows families to keep their preferred day/time each week. A consistent schedule allows for maximum progress.
If you are on the fixed schedule and need to change your schedule (summer), the change will be considered permanent, and your previous therapy spot will be released.

You can cancel sessions as needed with 48 hours notice and schedule make up sessions.

If families can’t commit to weekly sessions, therapy openings are offered as they occur. This works for families who want sessions every other week or once a month. The time and day of the offered sessions can’t be guaranteed and will vary week by week. Prepayment of 4 sessions is preferred which makes the scheduling process smoother as no session is held without payment.
This model works well for families that can’t commit to weekly sessions. Once payment is received, you can schedule the sessions and spread them out over a few months.
You can also schedule same day appointments which may be appealing to families who are concerned about the cancellation policy or have children that get sick often.
